Why Is My Water Heater Running Out of Hot Water So Quickly?

Few things are more frustrating than a cold shower halfway through your morning routine. If your water heater seems to run out of hot water faster than it used to, there are several possible causes — and most of them are fixable.

Sediment Buildup at the Bottom of the Tank

Over time, minerals from your water supply settle at the bottom of your tank. This layer of sediment acts as insulation between the burner and the water, making your heater work harder and heat less water efficiently. Flushing the tank annually can prevent this, but if buildup is severe, it may be time for a replacement.

A Failing Thermostat or Heating Element

Electric water heaters have two heating elements — upper and lower. If the lower element fails, only the top portion of the tank heats up, dramatically reducing your hot water supply. A plumber can test and replace a faulty element relatively quickly and affordably.

Your Tank Is Too Small for Your Household

A family of four typically needs a 50–80 gallon tank. If your household has grown or your usage patterns have changed, your existing tank may simply not be large enough. Upgrading to a larger tank or switching to a tankless water heater can solve the problem permanently.

The Dip Tube Is Broken

The dip tube directs cold incoming water to the bottom of the tank so it can be heated before rising to the top. If the dip tube breaks, cold water mixes directly with the hot water at the top of the tank, making it seem like you're running out of hot water quickly. This is a common issue in water heaters that are 10+ years old.

Your Water Heater Is Simply Getting Old

Most tank water heaters have a lifespan of 8–12 years. As they age, efficiency drops and recovery time (how quickly the tank reheats) slows down. If your unit is approaching or past this age range, replacement is often more cost-effective than ongoing repairs.

If your water heater is leaving you in the cold, G Fox Plumbing can diagnose the issue and recommend the best solution — whether that's a repair, a flush, or a full replacement. Give us a call at (504) 920-7152.
